BCGEU Strike Caused Cannabis Store Closures and Layoffs
September 14, 2022Thrive Cannabis Licensing Consultants Do Much More Than License Applications
September 20, 2022BC wineries, craft breweries and distilleries are renowned for producing best-in-class, award winning liquor products. They do so while contributing to the provincial economy and providing employment in their communities.
According to a research study (PDF) published in 2017 , “Canada’s Wine Economy – Ripe, Robust, Remarkable” (the latest Canada-wide study available), in 2015 the BC wine and grape industry contributed $2.8 billion to the BC economy. This included $1.95 billion in provincial business revenue, $312 million in tax revenue, and $512 million in wages (see the Wines of British Columbia media release for details). BC craft breweries also make important contributions to the economy. In 2020, BC’s 204 breweries contributed over $319 million to the BC economy and employed approximately 4,500 people. BC distilleries employ hundreds more.
During the BCGEU Strike, BC Distilleries & Wineries Filled the Gap
During the BCGEU strike of August 2022, BC liquor distribution was disrupted. Provincial liquor stores put purchase caps on liquor products and a lack of distribution to private wine stores, restaurants, pubs, and lounges quickly emptied supplies. BC distilleries and wineries helped fill the supply gap to businesses and consumers.
